Apple airplay on lock screen

I see I'm not alone, plenty comes up in searches, but nothing that works. One previous reply from support is-

"Power cycle the iPhone using these instructions: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support. While simple, this can refresh the iOS, apps and connections."

That worked, for about 1/2, then back to airplay on my lockscreen everytime I pick the phone up. I don't even use airplay.

Next support suggestion-

"If the icon remains, check out the steps outlined here on how to control what is on the Lock Screen: Control access to information on the iPhone Lock Screen - Apple Support"

Following those steps is impossible as the options are grayed out. This began happening out of the blue, possibly with some app update or something. What to try next?
