In my previous Macbook Pro 2017, I was able to charge my phone also with the closed screen. It was very practical to recharge the phone while travelling, but with the new Macbook Pro M1 it does not work.

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. You'll want to make sure to first connect the iPhone to your Mac with the charging cable. Please ensure that the lid is open on the MacBook Pro. This way you can go ahead and authorize your iPhone and allow the Mac to establish a connection with your iPhone. This will allow it to charge it. Once that's done, you can close the lid and test to see if your iPhone is charging your iPhone as expected.
