Safari Pinned Tabs on Mac Disappear after Merging Windows

For the past year or so, through the past two Mac operating systems, my Safari pinned tabs often disappear after I merge Safari windows. The pins don't come back after restarting, and I have to recreate them all. The problem went away for a bit, but now it's back.

Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know how to solve it? I'm thinking of trashing my safari preference files, but I don't want to lose all of my bookmarks.

Hi there Todd Berliner,

We're happy to provide some guidance. To start, you'll want to be sure your Mac is updated to the latest version of macOS Ventura, which is macOS Ventura 13.0.1. To learn how to update your Mac, have a look at this link: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

If your pinned tabs still disappear after merging windows in Safari, let's try testing this behavior in another user account. Learn how to set one up here: Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

Let us know how it goes!

Cheers.

Hello,

I, too, have had tabs disappear in the past 6 months. It is very frustrating and time consuming, and I cannot find a solution.

By the way - - I notice that just before this happens, my pinned tabs begin to look different (squished together, long horizontal tabs, and they won't open or close properly. Sure enough - - they're gone the next day.

My Solution: I created a Bookmark Folder and named it "Pinned Tabs". Then I went to the websites that I wanted, pinned them, and and added them to the Pinned Tabs folder.

As an extra precaution, I created a database on Numbers and copied the web addresses.

Both of these ideas seem "backwards", but ithe next time my tabs disappear, I will be able to get them back a little more easily.

I hope this is helpful!

Hi, Todd!

I tried this and it is my easiest ”solution” so far:

Click on the Safari icon in the dock.

Go to Options and “checkmark”  Open at Login.

This worked a little better. Now when I open my window, the tabs are not pinned; HOWEVER, they are all there and appear as regular tabs.

Then, all I have to do is “pin” them.

Still inconvenient, but better than before.

I also notice that if I don’t “quit” Safari, the tabs generally stayed pinned.

I hope this works for you!

Todd, this may be more info that you want, but I discovered one more thing:

I notice that when  I have my cursor in a new start page tab, my originally pinned tabs appear under favorites.

If you set up a Pinned Tabs Folder under Bookmarks, try this:

Click on Safari (to the right of the apple at the top of your screen)

Go to Settings,

General

"Favorites shows:"

Now you can have any favorite folder shown on you start page.  I set this to open my Pinned Tabs.

So my start page looks like this.

All I have to do is open and repin any missing tabs.

Hi Todd,

Based on the excellent troubleshooting you have already done, we think it might be helpful for you to speak with an AppleCare technical advisor to continue investigating this issue. Click the link below, choose the phone number for your region from the list, and call when it is convenient.

Thank you.

I spoke with Apple Support, and my case eventually escalated to a senior advisor who discovered that his computer did the same thing--his pinned tabs disappeared when he merged all Safari windows. I'm not sure what to do about the problem, in that case. I had to leave the conversation at that point to attend a meeting, but I don't know if it's worth contacting Apple Support back again about it.

Just to add to the voices so folks know it's not an isolated issue; I recently upgraded to Ventura 13.0.1 and have been repeatedly losing my pinned tabs ever since. Never had the issue happen once before installing Ventura. I've done the reboot thing a few times to no positive outcome, and I'm far too busy to waste my time calling into Apple Support. Just letting the world know this is happening. Here's what's happening to me - because it sounds a little different. I'm not attempting to Merge Windows when my pinned tabs disappear. Instead, what's happening is that my pinned tabs are mysteriously just turning into regular tabs instead of pinned tabs (I've noticed it a few times). Once the pinned tabs turn into regular tabs, every time I either restart Safari or just start absent-mindedly closing tabs because I have a bunch open - I lose the pinned tabs I want to keep because instead they've on-their-own become just ordinary tabs that you would normally lose any time you close your browser. So there, the world knows, I'll just live with the inconvenience for now but hopefully Apple will release an update and the problem will disappear.

Hi,

Thank you for responding.

Yes, I've upgraded to the latest macOS Ventura 13.0.1, and the problem persists.

I tried the test user account, as you suggested, and Safari does not show the same problem on the test account (at least, not yet). However, I have another computer at work that also demonstrates the disappearing pinned tabs; the two computers sync Safari through iCloud. So it seems that, whatever is causing this problem is syncing across my Macs. Maybe that can help you with the diagnosis.
