why would apple ditch the sim card but leave the cut out on the frame?

The iPhone 14 series phones sold outside of the U.S. take a physical SIM. I would imagine it's faster, easier and cheaper to make one frame that accommodates all iPhones than to have to make separate ones.
However, you can let Apple know how deeply it offends your aesthetic sensibilities here:

It looks out of place and an eye soar every time I look at my new iphone pro max. Must have had left overs from phones that used a physical sim card and figured instead of enclosing this portion on new phones to have a detailed look, they figured a cut out pertaining to nothing working would be acceptable. I have a two tone band going around the phone now (silver 80% with a 20% color cut out). Just a complete and utter out of place cut out pertaining to nothing of use. Cheap, ugly, stupid and regretting I purchased this phone. yuk
