Emails fetch slow since Ventura

Since I upgraded my MacBook to Ventura emails take much longer to arrive, even when I click the Get New Messages button it says Checking for Mail... then No new messages.

There's no big delay with my iPad or iPhone.

Hello Vince_I,

If emails are slow to load on your MacBook, we'd like to learn more to see how we can help. Is this happening with a specific email account? When Mail says there aren't any new messages, is that correct? Are you seeing emails arrive for the same account on your iPhone and iPad, but not on your MacBook?

Try working through these suggestions for any slow performance on your MacBook, including Mail: If your Mac runs slowly - Apple Support

Send over these details and let us know if the steps in the link above seem to help. We'll take a closer look from there.

Thanks!

Hello Vince_I,

In that case, you'll want to take these related Mail troubleshooting steps: If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac - Apple Support

If you can’t send or receive email on your Mac

If you're having issues with sending or receiving mail using the Mail app on your Mac, this article should help.

If your Mac is connected to the internet but suddenly stops sending or receiving email, you should generally try again later, and if necessary work with your email provider to resolve. If you're using Apple's iCloud Mail, learn how to resolve issues with iCloud Mail.

Check for status messages

You might see a status icon such as a lightning bolt  or warning symbol  next to your account's inbox in the Mail sidebar, or in the upper-right corner of the Mail window. Click it to learn more.
iCloud account in Mail sidebar with lightning bolt icon shown

- If the status is Network Offline, make sure that your Mac is connected to the internet, then try again.

- If the status is Login Failed, check with your email service provider (ESP) to be sure that your account is set up correctly on your Mac.

- If Mail asks for your password, but entering the password doesn't help, find out why your email provider is rejecting your password.

- If your email service is experiencing a temporary outage, your email provider might have a status message on their website. For example, Apple's system status page shows the status of iCloud Mail. Status pages are also available for other email services, such as Gmail and Outlook. Some brief service outages might not appear on a system status page, so you might want to wait a few hours and try again.

Test using webmail

Many email providers offer webmail, which is a way to use email with a web browser such as Safari, instead of with an email app such as Mail. For example, if you're using an iCloud Mail account, you can use iCloud.com to send and receive email.

Webmail is a good way to verify that your account is valid, but it doesn't mean that your account is set up correctly in Mail. Your email provider can help you verify your email settings and check for other issues that affect sending or receiving email.

Remove your email account, then add it back

If no other solutions work, follow these steps:

1. Remove your email account in Mail.

2. Add your email account in Mail again.

3. Try to send and receive email.

Let us know if that solves it or not. If not, please let us know what happens when you use the Connection Doctor, as explained here: Use Connection Doctor in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

Wishing you well, take care.

1 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal.

2 - Safe Mode will also eliminate Third Party Software, extensions and drives from loading

3 - Does the issue present in this mode ?

4 - Sometimes a Safe Boot followed by a Normal Boot will just put things right.

5 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

6 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

7 - Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

Hello Sparks0829,

Yes that's correct, the iPad and iPhone are both retrieving email messages but not on the MacBook Pro, for all of my accounts. The MacBook has been on for over an hour right now, I've clicked on the "Get messages for all accounts" icon several times and it still hasn't refreshed.

I've worked through the Apple Support link you sent me and I have plenty of storage available and even with all the apps closed there is no difference.

So I've tried everything, I am connected to the internet, webmail works as expected, there's no warning icons visible, I tried deleting a mailbox and added it again, restarted my laptop and finally I called my provider who confirmed there were no errors at the mail server. This is happening with all 4 mail accounts.

However, if I quit mail and restart it, I get a flush of emails but after some time, (sometimes a day or so) it stops again.

Yup, pretty clean machine and nothing overtly visible that would impact e-mails coming in regularly.

Aside from below that needs a bit of a clean up, have nothing constructive to explain this e-mail issue

Clean up:

~/Library/LaunchAgents/ArduinoCreateAgent.plist

~/Applications/ArduinoCreateAgent/ArduinoCreateAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/Arduino_Create_Agent

Just so others that may come across this issue in future, the line that seemed to create the problem was a ~/Library/LaunchAgents.plist looking for an executable that was manually deleted.
