Locked out of Apple Watch

I got a new phone, re-set the old to factory settings and gave it away. During the new phone setup I rushed and skipped setting up my Apple Watch. Everything worked well until I had to recharge my watch and enter the code to open it. For some reason it didn’t recognize my pin. The support articles stated to go into your phone’s watch app and disable to pin. One big problem, it seems my watch was never synced to the new phone. Now I’m locked out of my watch. How to unlock it again?
