You may have it in theater mode. If you swipe up to get to the control center, do you see this highlighted?
This symbol may also be at the top center of the display. Theater mode will keep the face dark until you tap it, so it doesn't bother you or others in a darkened audience. If that's not it, Check other settings which may do something similar.
