My time machine backup of old Mac is to big for my new Mac

When trying to use the migration assistant to transfer my old Macs data (>1 TB) to a new MacBook Air M2 (1 TB) it will not fit. I want to skip restoring photos and instead download them later.

macOS Ventura on both machines.

I can't find an option to do this.

Any suggestions?

Clean transfer to new Macbook Air I have a 9 year old Macbook Air and it's time for a new one. I have a Time Machine backup on an external hard drive. That HD also contains a Photos file. There was not enough room on the Mac to store photos so the old photos (going back to early 90's) are on the external drive. I am sure that there is a lot of "junk" in the background that I won't want to transfer to the new Macbook. How do I transfer all my programs, data, files, etc from the old to the new Mac without also transferring all the unneeded background stuff? Then I will also transfer SOME of the Photo files from the external drive to the new computer. I assume I just plug in & then drag to Macintosh HD in FInder?

Wondering the tradeoffs of inheriting time machine backup I just added a new 15" MacBook Air as my primary machine. My older MacBook Pro (2013 edition) will remain in the rotation as a backup machine with partial usage. Using migration assistant I moved my user account, and it offered to pickup my Time Machine backups. While this generally makes sense to accept, I want to understand the ins and outs. While I have migrated my user account, one thing I have NOT migrated yet is my large photo library from Aperture (which was on a separate drive). This will need to transition to Lightroom at some point, and I'm not taking that project on immediately. Backing up photos is one my main needs, so the fact that I haven't migrated that library yet makes me think I should wait to inherently the TM backup. So my questions: If I'm migrating my account and primary usage (I am) is there any argue to start a new TM backup rather than inherent the older old? Can I delay inheriting until after I handle the photo library in the next few weeks? How would I trigger this when ready? If I inherent, will the old machine then start its own set of new backups? That would make for a lot of redundant data usage on my TM drive as they have all the same files (outside of the photos). I did intent to leave the old machine frozen in time to have a backup of a lot of key documents (in addition to TM that is) Thanks support forums - I just can't seem to find much information on what happens to the old machine if I choose to inherent, and to be honest while I've backed up for years, I've never actually used Time Machine to restore so I'm not particular familar with it.

Restoring Time Machine Backup of an external hard drive that has failed? Hello all, For some reason I just can't figure this out, and I feel it should be pretty straightforward. I have an external hard drive where I store all of my most important professional files (650gb) and my photo library (250gb). This is obviously a bunch of important data, so I have set up time machine to back it up along with my main computer. This week that hard drive failed. I have a new one now - same overall style, size, and formatting system - and I can't for the life of me figure out how to use time machine to restore the data from the backup of the previous hard drive to the new one. The time machine app browser seems to operate through versioning files, where it is expecting you to be able to pull up the finder window for the files you want restored. I don't have access to that finder window, and I can't seem to get the time machine app to recognize the new hard drive as the one I want to transfer the files to. I tried. Migration Assistant, which let me navigate to the external hard drive backup and select it to restore, but it will only let me move those files to my computer, and I would need to move ~1tb worth of files, which is the size of the entire internal HD. Is it as simple as just navigating to the backup.backupdb folder and copying files from there? I can verify that everything I need is right there, and accessible. I just don't want to accidentally mess up the only versions of these files that I have left, so don't want to play around with those files unless I need to.
