Visual Voicemail not working

After the update of iOS 16.1. I cannot get my visual voicemail to work nor get any notifications of new voicemail.

I googled how to troubleshoot this matter and tried everything. Restarting my phone, turning the airplane mode on and off, reinserting my SIM card, resetting my network, changing my voicemail password (would always say error try again later).

So I went ahead and reached out to my phone carrier, was assured that changing my password would work but had to wait 24 hours. 24 hours had passed and still nothing. Reached out again and talked to another representative, was told they were getting error on their end too and for me to wait another 72 hours to hear back from the customer service. A week later I did not hear anything back and again reached out. Was told that maybe my SIM card needed to be changed. So I drove to the nearest carrier store, got my SIM card changed and still no visual voicemail nor notifications. Was told to go to Best Buy and talk to the geek squad, they can help troubleshoot it. So of course I drove to Best Buy. Did some diagnostic and everything came back normal, nothing was found wrong with my phone.

Now I am reaching out to see if anyone is having the same issue or if anyone knows how to fix it?! I am getting frustrated, I already exhausted everything I can possibly do.

VoiceMail (Visual / Normal) is a Carrier Specific feature. Contact your Carrier (Cellular Service Provider), the agency that issued the SIM / eSIM to you.

It is a carrier issue.

Virtually every user who's had this fixed has had it fixed as a result of the carrier correcting something in their database, not by replacing hardware or by a new version of iOS.

Further, millions of users are using any given version of iOS without this issue.

I get that it's frustrating, but voice mail is a carrier function and therefore it's up to them to get it working correctly.

This non-functional Visual Voicemail problem began for us in late 2019 while using an iPhone 10 on Verizon.

In 2020, we upgraded to an iPhone 12 Pro and the frequency of the problem increased.

We tried just about everything, including time-consuming troubleshooting with Verizon and Apple tech support.

This usually fixed things temporarily:

  • Toggling Siri in Settings / Siri & Search

and / or

  • Turning off Wi-Fi and rebooting the iPhone

But, the problem would always eventually return.

Visual Voicemail has been a solid feature available on all iPhones since 2007!

From a technical standpoint, this really should not be complicated or difficult to fix.

It could be caused by a combination of things on the iPhone and confusion in the carriers VM system.

Anyhow, important, time-sensitive voicemails that are crucial to our business were getting lost in space for days.

Last week, in desperation, we switched carriers to T-Mobile and began using a brand new iPhone 15 Pro.

With a different carrier and new phone, I was certain that this would fix it.

Unfortunately, THE PROBLEM REMAINS!

I find it interesting that resetting Siri temporarily fixes the issue.

I wonder if a particular App or unknown setting is causing this bug?

Not all, but many of the voicemails we don't receive are placed from a landline.

Could noise or poor audio quality caused by calling from an old phone cause this problem?

This is the exact problem for my business as well. I’ve upgraded phones and switched carriers but the problem is always present. I’ve lost business because of this. The only thing that we can do is dial into our carriers voicemail to retrieve voicemails but you can’t pause, rewind or even use on speaker so it’s annoying. I’m seriously thinking about switching to an android phone.
