Using file names as titles in Photos

With Photos in Ventura, if you take a screen shot, title it on your desktop, and then drag it into Photos, that title becomes the file name but not the title of the photo. To get it as the title, you need to copy and paste or retype it. Is there a more automatic way to get a file name to appear as the title of the photo?

Yes, you can title the pictures before they are imported. The title is stored in the metadata of the photo, and there are apps to do this. I use GraphicConverter which will, for instance copy the file name into the title and other such things. It will also allow you to batch change file names. There are others apps for this, as well.

They do work with Ventura. The scripts compiled as an applications can be downloaded from this tutorial site:  P01 - Applescripts from Photos’ User Tips Compiled as Applications

The are from a larger connection of user tips and scripts here: Thematic Index to Photos for Mac related User Tips.

You can see the filenames below below thumbnails, just like the titles. How to view the titles or filenames below… - Apple Community

When you set the toggle switch in the toolbar to display the thumbnails in the correct aspect ratio instead of the tiled squares and set the checkmark for "View > Metadata > Titles", you will see the titles below the thumbnails. If a photo has no title, the filename will be displayed instead, but grayed out. You have only to copy the filenames to the Title Field, if you want the photos to be sorted by the filenames.

Thanks Ralf. Any time you take a photo and add it to Photos, it comes in with its own file number (such as IMG...), and you have to give a unique title to that photo. If you have a number of photos of the same theme (for example, from the same place), you can select all the photos and write a title in the Info box; this batch change means that each photo will have the same title, so you then have to individually differentiate each one (such as by adding -01, -02, etc.). But when you are taking screen shots that are then put on your desktop or into you documents folder, you can title the photos before they are put into your Photos program. When you drag them into Photos, your title is preserved, but as the file number, not as a title. The Info box for a photo allows you to copy the file number (the name you have given the photo) and paste it into the Title area. But that means doing it one title at a time (a copy and paste for each photo) when you have already given titles to all the photos (screenshots). The questions is, then, can you put a photo (that you have already given a title to) into Photos so that your title appears not only as the file number but ALSO as the title?
