how do I cancel my Medium membership - for when I try, Medium simply directs me to my Apple ID?

What is a Medium membership?
Did you subscribe/pay them directly or did you use the app store? You can check your subscriptions in Settongs > Apple ID > Subscriptons and cancel them there.
