Apr 18, 2012 12:19 PM in response to SonOfLightby Grant Bennet-Alder,Most PC cards have only BIOS support, instead of EFI support, or you will not get any picture under Mac OS X. A 5770 must have Apple Firmware (include BIOS AND EFI) .

Apr 19, 2012 7:44 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby SonOfLight,I guess the ASUS 5770 has both. Because its running smooth on my end. I am about to use Aftereffects to do some postproduction work on some videos right now. I havent gotten any problems with it either.

Apr 19, 2012 12:42 PM in response to SonOfLightby Grant Bennet-Alder,I don't understand how this card can be working for you, I searched for "Macintosh" on their site and got NO hits.

Apr 19, 2012 1:23 PM in response to SonOfLightby BrianMBM,Let's not get off track here people. Religion has nothing to do with making a graphics card work or not.
One key distinction with the 5770 to understand is that they are made both for PCs and MACs. Apple is currently selling all new Mac Pro's with the 5770 installed as a standard. I have my old Mac Pro 1,1 running with the same Apple branded 5770 as what's loaded into the new boxes. I don't have any experience with putting a PC card in a Mac. I don't recommend it. I'm not saying this is what's happening, but from what I can tell it looks as though this may be the issue.
Also, make sure you are running 10.7.3 ( I can't speak to the 2 previous releases of Lion) because the video drivers are built into the OS and work in my setup just fine. I would also check that your power cable is installed and seated properly. If the card isn't getting power, it won't work.
Just giving my 2 cents...

Apr 19, 2012 1:24 PM in response to SonOfLightby Grant Bennet-Alder,Do you get the gray Apple with the spinning gear at Startup? Or does it stay dark until the login (or desktop background if you auto login) comes up?
-
Apr 19, 2012 2:43 PM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby BrianMBM,I do get the grey Apple with the spinning gear at startup. I have 2 1080p LED monitors. The primary monitor comes out of idle as soon as I hit the power button on the Mac. The primary is also connected to a DVI- mini display port apadter and into the first MDP on the 5770.

Apr 26, 2012 2:01 AM in response to James Webster3by Arturus,I've just replaced the dying X1900 in my Mac Pro 1,1 (OSX 10.7.3) with an Apple Radeon 5770 and while it runs the finder fine, it won't play and video or sound. Final Cut Pro X will load, import video clips, etc, but won't play the video. Can anyone suggest anything? There seem to be many people here with the same setup not reporting any issues.
Thanks,

Your issue probably involves copy protection.
You should start a new thread with a catchy title to adress your issues, rather than camping onto this one, which is getting way too long and is not focused on your issue.

Won't Play Video - common thread here and on Lion Community, including but not limited to Safari
I doubt the 5770 and playing video are related. Lion? maybe.
+1 on this is separate from the support for 5770 in 10.6.8+ in MacPro1,1's.

Apr 26, 2012 2:58 PM in response to James Webster3by Arturus,Thanks for the replies, Grant and The hatter. Looks like it was a false alarm, after testing various video applications I worked out that nothing involving sound played properly, including preview from the Finder using the space-bar; BBC iPlayer, YouTube, etc. I was thrown a little bit as everything else worked fine, Finder, Aperture, Word, etc. So I re-started (after re-installing Flash) and Final Cut Pro X worked fine, as well as everything else, panic over.
I'm guessing it might have had something to do with waking from sleep?! I don't really know, but it's fine now. Long may it continue :-)

May 2, 2012 8:31 AM in response to Arturusby Julian Morgan,I've had a 5770 installed in my MP 1.1 for over a year now with no problems - I don't really have a huge problem now, but since upgrading to Lion 7.3 I frequently have to "detect displays" in preferences to get it to notice my second monitor on start up and waking from sleep. This never happened with Snow Leopard.
I'm using miniport to DVI adapters from Apple.
It's not a biggie as its very quick to fix, but maybe someone here can explain why this is happening now when it didn't before?
cheers

Sep 16, 2012 10:40 PM in response to James Webster3by DavidInOC,Hi all, great info--thanks! I have a few questions. First, I have a 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 with the Nvidia 7300 GT running OSX 10.6.8. I've been told by a friend's buddy who is a Genius that the card is on it's way out based on reported symptoms.
So, this brings me to installing an Apple ATI Radeon 5770. I bought one from my local store and the box was a returned item, retaped and sold at a 5% discount. I'm reading about the video power cord but didn't find one in the box. Is it included or is it sold separately? If it's sold separately, my plan is to get one and try this opened box 5770. If it works, I might return the mess and buy an new unopened one for piece of mind. 5% isn't much of a discount but it was the only one they had.

Sep 17, 2012 6:59 AM in response to DavidInOCby BrianMBM,The power cable does come in the box, so I'd suggest going back to the store where you got it and mention you need the cable. It won't work without it.
I would also suggest updating your systemt to at least 10.7 to get updated drivers for the 5770, and purchasing as much ram as possible. The 2007 MacPro won't be able to run 10.8. I have the same machine as you and I'm running the 5770 with 12g of system ram.
Good luck

Sep 17, 2012 7:37 AM in response to James Webster3by DavidInOC,Thanks Brian. I have 4 mb of ram. I'd prefer not to buy more as I have a new mac pro on order. I'd just like to stabilze this current machine until the new one arrives. So the 5770 can't run with only 4 mb or it will but just not able to take advantage of its capabilities? Maybe I should look for a used 7300 GT as an option?
