Q: ATI Radeon HD 5770 in MacPro 1,1

I've searched all over these forums, there was some talk about the ATI Radeon HD 5770 working in a 1,1 MacPro, but I never really found a definitive answer. In the apple catalog someone posted this:

"It should be fine ATI cards unlike nvidia are built to be compatible with both EFI 32 and EFI 64 interfaces and i know the 4870 is fully compatible even with the first generation intel mac pro some people were saying that the 5770 takes up 2 pci express slots but that is just false i havent had the chance to try it myself since my 4870 is enough for me but i am sure it should work just fine"

Any final word on this? I'm eager to upgrade.

MacPro1,1, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Yes it is. Figured out my issue. I had one display on the new card and one on the old card. I purchased the Mini Display to DVI cable at apple store today and put both monitors on the Radon 5770 card. Works like a champ. This is a great GPU....Working on 1.5GB PSD files is a pleasure. Everything "snaps" into place with no delays. Love it.

Just scored a HD 5770 video card to install into my Mac Pro 1,1 as an upgrade to the original 7300 GT card. My question is - will I need to use the included power cable or is the PCI bus power enough for the 5770 in a 1,1?

According to the article, the 5770 mini DisplayPorts are not supported on a macPro 1,1. only DVI.

Can only say I'm using one 24" Apple Cinema Display off a mini displayport and one 24"DVI monitor on my 2006 MacPro with 5770 card.

I have tried it in 2 Mac Pros 1,1 in our company and so far neither are working with this graphics card.
Yes the power adapter is seated properly.

Ah well. Waste of money.

Traucher: did you read the update posted on 8/27/10? Specially the second bullet?

* The 5770 in the 2006-2007 is compatible using the newest build of 10.6.4 which is included with the new Mid 2010 Mac Pros and allows you to take advantage of all three display outputs on the 5770.

Now that Mac OS is at version 10.6.7, everything should be even better.

Ah, Hatter. You sound knowledgeable on this. I too am looking to upgrade from the stock slowpoke graphics card.Does anybody you know, or have you had a 5770 running with a 30" Cinema HD display at full res? Just want some anecdotal evidence before I throw down some hard earned.

Are you using a display connected to the DVI port? It sounds more like you have a defective card. 5770s are known to work quite well in 2006 Mac Pros. What other add-on cards are installed in the systems, if any?

I have a 5770 installed on a MP 1.1. I bought it in order to run a 27" apple cinema. It works just great at all resolutions. But I don't use full res because it makes the print so small in the apps I use.

Need some help with OS X 10.6.7 and HD 5770 (XFX brand).

Mac Pro 1.1 currently running 7300 GT, tried replacing with the 5770, no video to either monitor.

Am I missing something? Not a Mac person, swapping out video card on a work machine.
