Hi agarc1035,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with your Messages. We'd like to help.

You mentioned that you backed up your messages yesterday and now you're seeing messages from months ago. Can you tell us more about that? Did you turn on Messages in iCloud or create a new backup in iCloud or on a computer? After backing up your messages, did you delete them and now all you see are those older messages?

Let's have you close Messages and restart your iPhone so you can be sure things still aren't working as expected:

How to close an app

You should close an app only if it’s unresponsive. The way you close an app depends on the type of device that you have. Find your iPhone or iPod touch model below, then follow the steps. Or learn how to close an app on your iPad.

iPhone X and later
1. From the Home Screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle of the screen.
2. Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close.
3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close the app.

iPhone SE, iPhone 8 and earlier, and iPod touch
1. Double-click the Home button to show your most recently used apps.
2. Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close.
3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close the app.

iOS 16 isn't supported on iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 7, iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPod touch.

Let us know how that goes.

Take care!
