Apple Mail icon greyed out

My apple mail icon is greyed out. I quit mail and restarted. I shut down and restarted. I have many mailboxes. I can still delete with the delete button. Can you help me please?

Boot into Safe Mode, and see if that clears this:

I started it in safe mode. Delete icon still greyed out. I restarted to get it out of safe mode and the delete icon is still greyed out.
