Streaming and iPad as External Monitor

I've tried to use various streaming services (Netflix, Crunchyroll, HBO) in both Safari and Chrome while having my iPad plugged in via USBC as an external monitor.

Unfortunately, the streaming services seem to give me the same reaction that occurs if I were to screen record or take a screenshot; that is, I am given audio/subtitles but no video. The second I un-"screen-mirror" I receive video again.

Is there a setting or something else I need to do so that I can have streaming going while using two monitors?

Hello bfindley,

Being able to use your iPad as a second display is a great feature. To confirm, does this happen whether you're playing the video on the iPad display or Mac display when using Sidecar? Also, if you haven't updated iPadOS and macOS, ensuring your devices are updated are great steps to help resolve many issues. You can find the steps for updating iPadOS listed below and outlined in the following article.

  1. "Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
  5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do."
