Sudden deluge of contacts in Messages and Phone after downloading 16.1.1

After downloading 16.1.1, when I search for a contact to try to make a call or send a text, I get a ton of superfluous contacts.

I get lots of email addresses that I need to scroll through in the phone app. And when I want to send a text and I search for a contact, not only do I get a ton of useless email addresses, but also I get every group my intended contact has ever been part of — included a “group” of two which includes MY phone number. So now I’m wasting a lot time when trying to text or place calls.

Contacts are neither stored on the iPhone nor on SIM. They are synced to an email account that you may have added Google, iCloud, AOL, Exchange, Outlook, Yahoo or any Other

So this is nothing to do with downloading of an iOS.
