Will the people who provide the Jive software to run this Apple discussions board ever make it possible to change are user names or alaises again? I have tried to change my alias or user name 3 times following the instructions I was given, it did not work for me. I would like an Apple staff member to look into this for me and others. There should be software in this Discussion board that works, and works correctly!
This has been a request for the last several years and without success. I believe that Apple has enough money to order Jive to fix the software. If Jive refuses, Apple could then buy the company outright and then force the wanted changes. Of course as I've suggested numerous times, the resulting software could be named "AppleTalk" 😉

But that is only a teaser and doesn't answer any questions such as what software platform will it be running on, will we be able to keep our current questions, posts, hard-earned points, etc.
Well apparently the software lets you do it already they just have it disabled. In other words, they can fix it but they don't care about you. A simple change limit would do for most of us. I don't want my name all over the internet. (same reason I won't use Ping)
To expand just a little bit on what ali brown posted in the other thread...
Prior to adopting Jive as the software upon which to run Discussions, Apple was using software named WebX. The WebX software permitted users to change their aliases at will. This did, indeed, allow some 'playful' folk to cause problems by doing just that (such as by mimicking another's alias and posting a bogus message).
After using WebX for a few years, it became apparent that Discussions was getting too big for it to handle - too many users, too much traffic. WebX started having serious problems in running smoothly, sometimes in being able to run at all.
Apple looked around at other choices and settled on Jive, the current software. Although Jive's feature set seems much the same as WebX, there are some significant differences.
One dfference is the inability to open a specific thread in Flat mode while keeping Threaded as your personal default, i.e. without altering your preferences.
Another difference is that it became no longer possible to change one's alias. Current active users at the time of the changover to Jive were warned about this lock-in of one's alias, and were encouraged to make whatever change they wanted while Discussions was still on WebX, before the new Jive software went active. Once Jive went active no change was possible; that still holds true now.

The answer is simple: just stop using the Internet and unplug your computer(s), cellphone(s), etc.
What part of "It is NOT possible to change your alias on sites using Jive Software" don't you get?

well since you asked so nicely... the NOT part.
I'm a Webmaster and I can tell you is not only possible its super easy to do.
Ah, but are you a Jive Software employee? If so, tell your bosses they're doing it wrong. If not, then offer to re-code their products for free since it is "super easy" for you.

I'm also a Webmaster and I agree that it's super easy to go into the database and change a username when you have an occasional user in a small to moderate sized community who wants to do that.
When you have a million or so members in your community it becomes a little more difficult because
there is no way to change a username from the admin panel using Jive's forums software. It has to be done by hacking the Users table and rebooting the db server, and that is clearly untenable on a site of this size.
