unable to unpack .bin archive for updating 3D printer firmware, what app to use?

what do you use to unpack .bin archives that are unsupported by Archive Utility, that can’t be extracted by Unarchiver? I have a 3D printer that may need firmware updates and I can’t update if I can’t access the .bin file. The icon that downloads has a zipper on it so I’m assuming the actual file needs to be extracted. Any app I tried for unarchiving say that the files could not be extracted or that the format is unsupported (Unarchiver, Unzip One, Archive Utility). I’m using a MacBook Pro M1 and Ventura 13.0.1.

Creality was not helpful with Mac related issues, but they did a really good explanation of how to do it, I just couldn’t get the .bin file out. 3D print firmware upgrades are not Mac friendly, and I don’t want to buy a PC laptop just for 3D printing. That can’t be the only answer here! Please help if you can, I can’t be the only Mac user who has had this problem.

Thanks in advance.

3D printer firmware upgrades are distributed as bin files. Just as are firmware upgrades for many devices. The bin file is loaded directly onto the device following the device manufacturer's instructions. Here is an example description of how to load a bin file directly to a printer: https://3dprinterly.com/how-to-flash-3d-printer-firmware/

You will need to follow your specific printer model instructions for upgrading its firmware.

Further investigation at howchoo.com has pics that show that what I'm interpreting as a compressed (archive) format is really just the .bin. I guess I bricked the Ender somehow. It's confusing to me because the zipper on the file icon implies I should have to unzip it with something (like Unstuffit for Zip files). Maybe it's just because I'm a longtime Mac dinosaur and I just don't really understand these things until I have to learn about them. Sorry to take up your time, I got stuck on Mac thinking it's an archive format I need to do something about.

Thanks a million for your help, Bob.

Hi, Bob,

Thanks for the reply. What I have downloaded looks like thisAm I wrong in thinking that the top entry here is really an archive and not just the .bin file to load into the 3D printer? When it says that it is a MacBinary archive, and I see a zipper on the small icon, I think it's an archive and that there are files inside. I have had zero luck in getting any answers out there beyond using Unarchiver, etc. to do this, but Unarchiver, Archive Utility, Extractor, UnZip One say it's an unsupported format.

Thanks, Bob,

again, this seems to be an archive (compressed) rather than a single file. I understand how I'm supposed to do the whole process once I have a file in hand. The thing I get stuck on is the instruction to decompress to get to the file. Creality distributes this as what appears to be an archive according to my MacBook Pro and has no guidance on how to open it to get just the file. Just tossing it onto the Ender 3 v2 Neo following the instructions customer support gave me froze the screen and compelled me to return the unit (yeah, I gave up). I was hoping for advice on unarchiving utilities that can handle this for future reference. If it was a .zip or .rar I'd be fine, probably.

Thanks for your attention anyway,

H
