Where do you get 5?
I count 1 swipe and 1 tap.
Now let’s consider the shortcut. First, it takes up more space than a single app, and, it is only on one page of the Home screen. As I have 5 pages, that could be up to 4 swipes plus a tap.

Here:
I count 2 swipes and 3 taps. ...If any of those can be avoided, please let me know.

Perhaps that's because you haven't set up additional Focus modes beyond the default DND. I've set up several, so this is partially what I see when I tap the Focus button in Control Center:

Or better yet, just use the Focus button on the Control Center. No shortcut required!

How is Control Center's FIVE actions (swipes/taps) better than ONE tap on a shortcut icon?

That’s strange. I tap the Focus button on the control center and it changes color and toggles the DND setting. It doesn’t open Focus or anything else.
I will grant you a swipe to close the Control Center, however.

Or, put a shortcut icon on your Home Screen to toggle DND on & off – see HERE.
