I have a mac air, and some files have the cloud download feature next to them. I want to access these files when I am travelling (air) how do I do this. Why are they being uploaded anyway?

I have a mac air, and some files have the cloud download feature next to them. I want to access these files when I am travelling (air) how do I do this. Why are they being uploaded anyway?
It sounds like you have iCloud Desktop and Documents enabled: Add your Desktop and Documents files to iCloud Drive - Apple Support, with Optimize Mac Storage enabled: Free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support.
You can access these files stored in iCloud, as long as you have an internet connection, on demand by double-clicking them to open. If you need to access them offline, you can download them in advance, or turn off Optimize Mac Storage: Free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support.
