How do I delete emails before a certain date?

In the tiny header above the list click on Date Received to sort it Ascending or Descending.

Highlight the top one you want to delete then scroll to the last one you wish to delete, hold SHIFT key wilst highlighting that one... hit delete.

Export these to a Mailbox:

Filter out eMail with these date. Create a mailbox. Then, move them to that mailbox. From there, trash the mailbox. Finally, remove the eMail from Trash. Elsewise, you'd have to trash these in batches, which can be time consuming, if thousands of eMails.
