does the same apply for my 27"iMac?
does duplicates option in the side bar only show when I have duplicates in my library? same as on iPhone?

Yes. The Duplicaates folder only appears when it detects duplicate images in the library But it usually takes a day or so for the duplicates to get identified and added to the Duplicates folder.
