For a lost iPhone: Apple Support have another article online with steps to follow ... may be helpful:
What to do: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen - Apple Support
says:
"Look for your device on a map
To find your device, sign in to iCloud.com/find.
Or use the Find My app on another Apple device that you own".
If your missing device doesn't appear in the Find My app or at iCloud.com/find, you didn't turn on Find My.
There's no other Apple service that can find, track, or flag your device for you.
But there are steps that you can take to help protect your data.

All the best :-)

Locating a Lost iPhone:
A. For Find My:
To learn how Find My works, go here: Use the Find My App to Locate a Missing Device or Item - Apple Support
B. Backtrack your Locations:
If you were at a retail store or local cafe', then stop by and see if if was placed aside by the store manager. You never know.
C. Text the iPhone a Message:
If you cannot find this, then text the iPhone, sending it a messages asking whomever finds it to contact you. Perhaps, have them eMail you, putting a particular title in it (so that you recognize the eMail. If you go to pick it up from an individual, then have someone there with you, probably meeting them at a public, safe location, both for safety purposes.
D. Also, Contact Local Authorities:
Perhaps someone is respective enough to have turned-around handed it over to local authorities. See if they have found it.
