Siri: use my Library and stop defaulting to Apple Music!

When using Apple CarPlay I ask Siri to play some album in my Library, but she attempts to use Apple Music (I'm not a subscriber.) A answer to this from 2018 said to use settings->Music-> don't use Apple Music, but this option does not appear in the current iOS.

Today Siri signed me up for a free 7-day subscription without my explicit authorization just because I asked her to play an album from my library. And to add insult to injury, she did not play the album either from Apple Music or from my Library, but put up a VERY random playlist of stuff from my Library.

So, how do I tell iOS to never, ever make suggestions or play things from Apple Music?

Apple recently updated iOS to include a toggle in Settings > Music > Show Apple Music. Turning this off seems to stop Siri from defaulting to Apple Music. I too was automatically signed up for a 7-day trial that I did not agree too in December. I found this after the most recent update to iOS 16.2, this toggle seems to help.

Hi DB-mac, We appreciate you reaching out to us. We’d like to gather additional details that may help us be in a better position to assist you.

Are you experiencing a similar issue when asking Siri to play your music when CarPlay is not active?

Does it help if you change how you phrased the command?

In the meantime, let’s check for a software update and make sure that you are running the latest version of iOS.

While it isn't inherently assured that an update will resolve the issue, updating to the latest software version for your device can help isolate potential software issues.

Kindly secure a backup and update.

This same thing happened to me. I had thought, finally, Siri would start behaving itself. Not only did it start playing a streaming version of a song I owned, it reconfigured the app interface while I was driving and signed me up for a free trial of a service I emphatically do not want.

To add insult to injury, 16.3 appears to have dropped the settings which hid most of the Apple Music features. To be very clear: I don’t want this service and went out of my way to disable the clutter it introduced to my UI. If I could delete the Music app without removing my music library, I would.

Hundreds of users are getting this exact issue. I spent 2 hours on calls with apple and NONE of them ever heard of this and the option to STOP it has been removed. Apple is trying to force us to use their **** awful app like Spotify clone and we ONLY WANT TO PLAY OUR MUSIC.

We do not want your choice, your advice, some random "just like" so and so. Let us DISABLE EVERYTHING and ANYTHING and STOP trying to force this on us.

We spent YEARS building our collections, lists, and choices, and you are FOCKING it up. Stop. And Train your people to know what you are doing so they can tell us HOW to stop this.

Just to confirm that asking Siri on HomePod Mini will NOT play anything from your music Library unless you have an Apple Music Subscription. This is totally stupid and counter-productive and an example of everything bad about Apple.

I can now ask Siri to do this on my iPhone from my stored Music Library, but it will not work on HomePods, even with the latest 16.3.1 (iPhone) and 16.3.2 (Homepod Mini) IOS updates.

I'm having this exact same problem, only Apple Music then went on to delete tens of thousands of songs from my library on top of it. My phone is updated to iOS 16.3.1 and I don't have the Show Apple Music toggle in Settings > Music either. I know it used to be there, because I specifically set it so this wouldn't happen.

Apple has known about Apple Music subscriptions deleting downloaded music files from other sources since they launched Apple Music and haven't done anything to fix the issue. The only reason I kept buying iPhones after that became a known issue was because I knew I could toggle it off and not have a problem. I can't believe they'd sign everyone up for this stupid Voice trial without authorization, especially when they're clearly aware that it causes problems.

Honestly, I've scoured the forums, reddit, and the rest of the internet and can't find a solution. Enough people with the same issue have reported that contacting support directly doesn't resolve anything so I'm not going to waste hours of my time for the same result. Personally I'm shopping for a Sony Walkman for my music library (they still have headphone jacks too!) and planning on switching to an Android when my phone contract is up. Involuntarily signing me up for a service I explicitly do not want without asking me and that causes this much wasted time and frustration is my last straw with them.

Some details: iOS 16.1.1, iPhone 13 with USB cable to a Toyota Camry. MacOS 12.6.1 (although my other devices weren't actually involved.)

I mainly listen to music in the car during my commute, so I very rarely ask Siri to play anything except through CarPlay. Several times in the past I've asked Siri (CarPlay) to play xyz from my Library and the response has been something to the effect "playing xyz from Apple Music", but it didn't play anything (or maybe played from my Library, as asked - I just don't recall.) It never enrolled me in Apple Music before.

This time I had been listening to an album of classical music earlier, and when I tried to play the album again (manually) it only played the first cut, not the Album. So I asked Siri "play the album xyz from my Library". (Specifically I wanted the album of Bach French Suites") The response was "playing xyz by Johann Sebastian Bach from Apple Music", but instead of playing that it populated the up next list" was a totally random "playlist" of maybe 70-100 unrelated cuts from my library, many of which I hadn't played in years. It may be important that I have Cellular Data OFF for Apple Music, so technically it couldn't play xyz from Apple Music.

Then I was informed I had signed up for the 1 week free trial of Apple Music (I don't recall if that was while I was still in the car or only by email when I got home.) I NEVER asked to sign up. I'm concerned when the "free trial" expires I'll automatically be charged the monthly fee for Apple Music, which I REALLY don't want. I'm also concerned that Apple Music will start "optimizing" my Library by switching out versions of my music for whatever you've got on-line. This would really suck for my classical music Library where I have multiple versions of the same pieces performed by different artists, orchestras, etc.

Why is Apple Music being accessed when I've never asked for it? Also, why has Apple REMOVED the preference to "not access Apple Music" from the Music settings? (or at least, where have you hidden it?)

I had this exact same issue, and DID contact Apple Support. It was not helpful, beyond assuring me that I would not be charged after the 7 day trial (which, like the user above, I NEVER asked for in the first place). Again, why did Apple remove the ability to BLOCK Apple Music. I do not want it, and yet now I get that crap whenever I want to listen to my own library.

It's totally infuriating. I've had the same issue with a Homepod Mini - which suddenly started playing all this crap form Apple Music that I don't subscribe to. It made troubleshooting very difficult as it also signed me up for a trial which I never authorised.

So I thought initially Homepod was working by playing my music from my Apple Music Library (my own purchased and ripped CD music), when it was using Apple Music. I only noticed when the version of a song was the wrong cover art and a different mix!

I spent ages on the phone with Apple going on about this and she didn't believe me that I didn't authorise an Apple Music Trial! It seems Homepod does this automatically which is pretty low. Stop doing this Apple!

I am now on my 25th Homepod mini reset, wipe, downgrade to IOS 16.2 in an attempt to get this resolved, however, there are plenty of songs that will not play on my Homepod with Siri, yet worked perfectly on the iPhone.

I already have the Apple Music toggle OFF, but it still does not work. It's totally crappy software again from Apple.
