Apple Watch Ultra screen remains black in the morning on charger

This morning my Apple Watch ultra woke me up with the alarm clock while on the charger but the screen stayed black - no night stand mode - nothing. Can not activate the screen by touching but there is audible feedback that the watch is alive. Had to reset to get the screen back working. I am asking for help as this is the second incident within two weeks or so.

Voice over or screen curtain are NOT activated. WatchOS is on 9.1; iOS 16.12

Hi titusm,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand your watch screen will go black and you need to force restart it to get it working again. If this has happened multiple times, then we recommend unpairing your watch and setting it up again to see if the issue persists after doing so. This article has the steps: Unpair and erase your Apple Watch

"

How to unpair and erase your Apple Watch if you have your iPhone

  1. Keep your Apple Watch and iPhone close together as you unpair them.
  2. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
  3. Go to the My Watch tab and tap All Watches.
  4. Tap the info button  next to the watch that you want to unpair.
  5. Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
  6. Tap Unpair [your Apple Watch name].
  7. For GPS + Cellular models, choose whether to keep or remove your cellular plan.
    • If you want to pair your Apple Watch and iPhone again, keep your plan.
    • If you don't want to pair your Apple Watch and iPhone again, remove your plan. If you aren't going to pair with a different watch or iPhone, you might need to contact your carrier to cancel your cellular subscription.

8. Type your Apple ID password to disable Activation Lock, then tap Unpair.

Before erasing all content and settings on your Apple Watch, your iPhone creates a new backup of your Apple Watch. You can use the backup to restore a new Apple Watch. After your Apple Watch unpairs, you'll see the Start Pairing message.

Now you can set up your Apple Watch again or turn it off if you're selling it or giving it away.

"

If that doesn't help, we recommend contacting Apple Support for further assistance. Contact Apple Support

Take care.

So it worked for another 10 days, until yesterday morning when the screen stayed black again with morning wake up alarm. I switched off alarm clock with the side button. This time - instead of restarting - I simply took the watch off and put back on the charger. Screen awakend, displaying normal night mode again.

This morning no issue.

Still a behaviour that is slightly annoying not getting visual feedback in the morning at times. Guess I will contact apple support.

Same. It was working fine until yesterday.

I have the same blank screen when alarm goes off and Apple Watch is charging on the charger (The alarm is triggered by sleep schedule)

Blank screen but I could snooze. That means the input was working but the screen was blank. Putting it back on charger brought the display back.

I unpaired and paired the watch and restored from backup, same issue happened this morning.

Hopefully it is a software issue.

WatchOS is on 9.1; iOS 16.1.1 (updating to iOS 16.1.2 now)
