Apple Cinema Display questions
Hello - I have MacBook Pro 2020 and trying to connect my Apple Cinema Display. I've had this display connected to my iMac 2018 with no issues but can't get it to work. Any thoughts?

Thanks - I have that whole setup. Not sure the issue. Could I be screwing up the keystroke? In order to do the command F2 I have to fit the function key to have the F keys show-up on the MacBook's digital display. Other thoughts?
Ok - I've added some other pictures, too. Looks like the model number of the adapter I purchased a few years ago to use with the iMac (not cheap, but hey, free monitor :) ) Power adapter Model no. A1098 and A1306. The dongle A1970. Hope this helps and thanks for looking into this.
OK - we have these adapters. I had the apple adapter attached when we found it was incorrect. Purchased the black adapter from the link you sent. And it looks like I accidentally purchased the same apple adapter today (even says not for Cinema Display - oops ).
which model Cinema Display? 30? 23?
exactly what are you using?
¿what does Command-F2 have to do with ANYTHING?
Command-BrightnessDown toggles Mirror Displays, but that is NOT a requirement to get A picture.
Command F2 is used for Target Display Mode, which for Macs BEFORE 2020 models, and running far older MacOS could allow an older iMac to be used as a display. It does not apply in this case.

Please post the Names or model numbers for each of the mystery white boxes with cables you show in your excellent (but unlabeled) photos.
aha!
A1306 is the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter, exactly what you need to run the 30-in Cinema Display. Remember that you must connect its USB-A pigtail to a powered USB port (or an iPad charger if you prefer). If you do not connect USB from the Mac all the way through, you don't get a brightness slider on the Mac, and are forced to use the buttons on the display instead.
The dongle/adapter with a USB-C connector at each end, and a ThunderBolt symbol at each end is the wrong item for this setup. That adapter supports ONLY ThunderBolt displays, and no others, ever, no matter how many other adapters you try to use.
You need a USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter, which looks the same except it has no ThunderBolt symbols and costs a lot less:
Monoprice Select Series USB-C to Mini DisplayPort Adapter - Product # 24273 - $14.99
.
Hello all - so after this thread I purchased the Monoprice Select Series USB-C to Mini DisplayPort Adapter. Came in a few days ago. Didn't work. Probably the same issue. It was mentioned in a thread thereafter to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2. Got that today - pretty sure it is the same adapter I have - says not for Cinema Display.
So if anyone can send a link to an adapter that works let me know. If not . . . anyone interested in a display :)
Display, cords and Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 were all connected about 3 weeks ago (for past 7 years) to an iMac. So everything should be in working order except for the adaptor. I attempted to connect to my MacBook Pro 2020 (2 ports). One was using the adapter and the second was connected to the USB for power.
do you have the short USB-A pigtail from the big Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a reliable source of USB power?

The Mac uses a system that reminds me of “Plug and play” to determine what display is connected, and what its capabilities are.
To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.
This query is only sent at certain times:
• at startup
• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work
• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go
• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)
so try doing some of those things and see if the display comes alive.
Modern Displays with multiple ports are sometimes busy scanning the other ports, looking for an input, and miss the query from the Mac. They need to pay attention to the port you are actually using, or they will miss the query.
Tried both adapters. Tried both ports. Plugged the USB into a separate power supply to try that. Started everything to make sure there wasn't an issue with that. Tried another comment about pushing the option key with the display info up to see if I could manually bring up the new display.
Not sure what else to try.
There are other adapters that will work, I find Monoprice knows what they are talking about more often than some others, and they have good prices for things.
Hi,
Just wonder how to connect between MacBook Pro and Cinema Display.
You should use an DVI to usb C connector to get it to work. For the 30 inch Cinema Display you should use a dual link DVI to usb C
30 inch. On th iMac I had to use a keystroke in order to get the display to be recognized. I assumed it was the same here on the MacBook. Either way - nothing showing up here. Thanks
