Link launches in Safari instead of using existing app

When clicking a link in an email or in social media, the link will open in Safari (or sometimes the App Store) instead of in an app used every day. Two examples include New York Times and the My Doctor Online (from Kaiser).

What this almost always means is that I am forced to login to the respective website; and my credentials seem to be required every time, and don't seem to be saved in iCloud passwords (which I have enabled on all of my devices).

Note to Community Support bots: please do not politely include a generic link as your answer, such as "App Stops Responding", or suggest restarting or reinstalling the app (which I have done). Please answer the question directly, or let other knowledgeable members respond instead.

It seems to me a simple solution to this aspect of your issue is to log in while using Safari.

For example, while your browser is pointing to https://www.nytimes.com/ sign in by tapping the icon in the upper right.

Two problems: first, this is a problem on the iPhone, and, when the link opens in Safari, the login is not persistent; that is, if there is a significant time lag between using outside links, I'm forced to login AGAIN (and why would I want to take the extra time to login in any fashion when my NYT app is already logged in?).

Second, (which is the main problem) if I touch a link from Twitter, it opens in the Twitter app that I use; if I touch a link to the NYTimes, it opens in Safari, even if I have just used the NYT app on my phone.

So, no, that is not a simple solution.
