In My Watch tab, did you you try changing Settings, Workout units to metric?
I guessed you were here in UK as you spelled it Metres!
From your troubleshooting and if you tried changing Workout units, it looks like it may be a bug.
You can report it here, though they will not respond to you.

This measurement is determined by the country you are signed in to on your Apple Watch. If you are in a country which typically uses meters as the standard measurement, it will display in meters. Example, if your country you are signed into is UK, it will be displayed in meters. However, if you are in the US, which uses feet as opposed to meters, it will display in feet. I'm not aware there is any way to customize this on Apple Watch.
To confirm, I would encourage you to contact Apple directly. I'm going to guess you are in the US and signed into your watch in US Store? You can call Apple in the US at 800-MY-APPLE.
Hi there, thanks for this! Unfortunately I am in the UK and activated it here. Shortly after this I noticed it reported my elevation in feet! So I tried to work out how to configure it in metres. I noticed these figures were given alongside the compass readings so I went to the Compass app on my iPhone 12 Max Pro, this showed measurements in metres which I was happy about. As a result I am still at a loss to understand why the Watch figures are in feet. Thanks anyway.
You're welcome. You can also put in a feature request at the same site just in case it isn't a bug!
That site is also renowned for not having the latest OS in the dropdown so if it does not have OS9.1 don't worry leave it blank and just put it in the text
Thanks for your prompt reply. I will try what you suggest and failing that will report it to Apple! Many thanks!
Problem reported to Apple as suggested! Thanks.
Good luck.
