copying iPhoto library to external drive

I intend to copy my iPhoto library to an external drive. I also want to copy all slideshows made from those photos to the external drive. Will that happen if I drag the iPhoto library to the drive?

  • Does "everything" include QuickTime movies made from the iPhoto slideshows or do I have to copy the QT movies file to the external drive as well?

Are these in the Library? If so, yes. If not you'll need to copy them separately.

  • To make sure the original photo date, camera info, etc (I think this is called "metadata") is included for the external drive photo library, should I drag & drop the photos from the MB Pro to external drive or copy and paste the photo library?

You copy the Library. It contains everything. Don't start moving individual items. Just the library as a single entity. Drag it from your Pictures Folder to the external. It will copy it there.

  • should I copy the IPhoto application to the external drive to save a copy of it it since it's no longer available in the App Store?

If you want. but frankly, iPhoto is dead more than seven years now. Time to move on to Photos (its replacement) or some other app.

new photos that I import to my MB Air Photos program and edit with that app: will those edits stay with the photos if I import them into my iPhoto library on the 2011 MB Pro?

Depends on what you export from the Photos library. Export anything but 'Unmodified Original' and yes. (File -> Export)

On a different topic: new photos that I import to my MB Air Photos program and edit with that app: will those edits stay with the photos if I import them into my iPhoto library on the 2011 MB Pro? I have photos in a library on the MB Air that I want to add to the library on the MB Pro and then important the entire iPhoto library to the external drive.

Thanks So much for your replies!

Thanks!

I want to keep the iPhoto app in case my 2011 MB Pro dies because it iPhoto has options for creating slideshows that Photo doesn't have - annoying omissions such as being able to organize pictures manually instead of only by date taken. I use the Photos program when it does what I want and the additional Aperture editing functions are great.
