Hello kathyfrommountain,
The first thing we would suggest would be to check the setting for repeating keys.
These steps from Set how quickly a key repeats on Mac - Apple Support explain how to set the repeat parameters:
Set how quickly a key repeats on Mac
If you press and hold certain keyboard keys when in a text area, the key’s character begins to repeat. For example, the Delete key continues to remove text for as long as you hold it down.
You can set how long you must hold down the key before it starts repeating and how fast it repeats once it starts.
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu> System Settings, then click Keyboard
in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Drag the “Delay until repeat” slider on the right to set how long to wait before the character begins repeating.
3. Drag the “Key repeat rate” slider on the right to set how fast characters repeat.
If these steps do not resolve the issue, the next thing we would do would be to start the system in what is called safe mode. Safe mode only loads what is needed to run the computer. This can help isolate what is causing issues.
To start in safe mode, follow the steps from How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support based on what type of Mac you have.
The computer will take longer to start in safe mode, and the screen may have some distorted video as it starts up. This is normal. Once you are logged in, use the system and test to see if the issue continues.
If everything seems to work as expected, go ahead and restart the computer normally and test again. There are steps outlined on what to do if the issue does or does not continue in safe mode.
Starting in safe mode also forces the computer to run some disk checks similar to First Aid. This can actually resolve some issues.
Have a good day.
