Blurry Videos when shared with other iPhone users.

When I share videos, or when my wife shares videos with me, they’re really horrible quality. They look good on the original device. We both have iPhone 12, current software. We’ve shared via airdrop and iMessage. We’ve transferred over cellular and WiFi, no difference. Why can’t we share high quality videos?!?

Hello there TexasFree,

Based on what you've described, we would first suggest that both you and your wife check to see if you have the Optimize Storage enabled for your photos and videos. With this feature enabled, smaller, space-saving photos and videos are kept on your device while all of your original, full-resolution versions are stored in iCloud. While the higher resolution photo or video should download from iCloud before it is sent in a message, there may be an issue with the feature causing the unexpected behavior. Turning it off will help us isolate things further: Manage your photo and video storage - Apple Support

If either of you have low storage on your iPhone, this may also prevent the high-quality videos from being sent or received, as they will use more storage space directly on your device to do so. You can check to see how much storage you are using under Settings > General > iPhone Storage, and can get information on what to do if you are low here: How to check the storage on your iPhone and iPad - Apple Support

Should you still need help after that, don't hesitate to respond back. If you do, please let us know the answers to the following questions, which will help further narrow down the issue and select the most appropriate path forward:

  • Do you and/or your wife have the same issue when sending or receiving video from other people?
  • If so, do you know if they also use iPhone, or if they use another type of device (such as an Android)?
  • Do you have a similar issue with photos?
  • What is the exact iOS version number listed on each of your phones under Settings > General > About?

Cheers!
