Others' voice texts don't play through

Hi. I have an iphone XR. When people leave me voice texts, I can hear the beginning of the audio text, but it cuts off midway, and I can't hear the end of the message. I can't find anything in settings to change so that the messages will play all the way until the end. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you!

Hello hilarie210,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with playing voice messages. Have you tried restarting your iPhone? This simple step resolves a multitude of issues: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

"How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later

Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.

Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.

To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."

If that doesn't resolve the issue, does your iPhone need updating to iOS 16.1.2? Do you have a recent backup for the data in your iPhone in iCloud or your computer? If not, we recommend that you create one as described here: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Then update your iOS as outlined here: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hello hilarie210,

No worries at all! If this is happening with the Messages app and audio messages, then we'd need to continue isolating this further.

Does this occur when using headphones or no Bluetooth devices? If you haven't yet:

  1. Go to the Settings app
  2. Tap on Bluetooth
  3. Disable Bluetooth
  4. Test it out

Have you noticed this when videos are sent via text message or iMessage? This only occurs when you receive these audio messages, correct? Not an issue when you send them? We just wanted to confirm.

Let us know and we'll take it from there, take care.

Hello hilarie210,

Thanks for that. We really need to be on the same page here. Hope you don't mind we asking a few questions to clear this up.

1 . Are the people sending you voice messages from iMessage using the Messages app? Send and receive messages on iPhone - Apple Support

  • "Tip: Rather than typing every letter of your message, tap the Dictation button to dictate text."

2 . Or is this with the Voicemail feature? Check your voicemail on iPhone - Apple Support

3 . Or is this with shared Voice Memos? Make a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone - Apple Support

We ask because Voicemail is a provider service. If this is the voicemails people leave you, then you need to have them check if they lost signal recording the message, or more likely since it's on multiple people, have your provider check their system for anything that can cause this.

Thanks.

Hi, Voice messages from voice mail play all the way through just fine. It's only audio texts (audio messages shared via text rather than by leaving a message on my phone) that aren't playing through. Yes, I've tried restarting my phone, and it's got the most recent software. I think that there must be some setting about audio texts that limits the amount of time on play through, but I can't find anything about it in settings. Part of my problem is that I don't know what those are officially called, so I may not be searching via the right terms. Thanks!

Hi, Thanks for double-checking. I believe that this issue is happening through option 1. Audio messages are arriving via the text feature, not the phone calling feature, and that's when I'm having the issue.

Voicemails placed through phone-calling play through just fine.

Once someone shared a recording with me via the texting feature, and a few times, others have left me audio messages, also through the text feature.

I hope that this makes sense. As I said, part of my issue in researching this is that I don't know the right language to describe what's going on. Thank you!
