Problem saving print presets in Ventura

I can’t save changes in print preset since upgrading to Ventura
iMac 24″, macOS 13.0
I am using a Mac Pro with Mac OS 13.2, an HP DesignJet Z9+ 44" and an Epson SureColor P600, over local ethernet network for the Z9+ or USB connection for the P600. I fear I am going to have to downgrade my Mac Pro back to Mac OS Catalina to get back to consistently working print dialog and presets. I was foolish enough to think Apple would not break important features in their upgrades to the OS. I wanted to have the enhanced Apple ID/iCloud security that Ventura added, but not at the expense of useable photo print quality.
Color Sync issue causes double profiling
PS 24.1.1 / Ventura 13.2.1 (22D68) / Apple M1 Ultra 128 GB
In the print dialogue, under Printer Options / Color Matching the Color Sync setting is grayed out. In the following, the Default shows the radio button set to Color Sync as it should since PS will provide the ICC profile. The setting is copied to a new preset "Han Luster Sheet". When viewed, the new preset is no longer set to Color Sync, but to Epson Color Controls. This results in double profiling with colors grossly off. Since this dialog box is grayed out, it cannot be set back to Color Sync.
This is still occurring having deleted the printer in MacOS and via Epson's Uninstall, and then reinstalling.
Printer driver is Epson 12.62 (current for Ventura) for P7000. Same behavior after a complete print system reset.
As I was working with other vendors who have printing systems that operate outside of the Adobe environment, it seems there is a general failure to "remember" various preset settings (including sheet or roll paper):
...there are some bugs in the Apple print system in Ventura which can cause driver settings not to be remembered. This issue is not specific to [product name] but is a bug at the system level.
I am having the same types of issues as other users in this thread are reporting. I am using Ventura 13.2.1. I am printing from Photoshop 2023 to an Epson P5000. This is a huge pain.
Since I still had a bootable install file of Monterey (V12.6.3), I created a working version on an old hard drive. If you have room on your system's drive, it could be done there. I then downloaded the current Photoshop (V24.1.1) and installed it on the same HDD. I made sure I had access to the files on Ventura so I could access PS actions that I might need as well as display and printer profiles.
Now I'm able to boot into Monterey, start PS, and pull my image files and print them successfully using the old print dialogue that works.
Bernie,
That is a good idea. Given this situation has not yet been resolved and the inability to work on a Mac otherwise, I think I will try that too.
This is a major problem for professional users.
Thanks,
Bill
I've just installed the new update to Ventura 13.3.
Extraordinarily, the Paper Feed issue has STILL not been fixed.
Has there been a fix for the Printing Preset problem? We depend on this feature for our community college digital printing lab. We are running the latest version of Ventura and are connect via USB to Epson P5000, 6000, 7000 printers, printing from Adobe PS or LR. We have been using Mac Printing Presets created in the Mac OS Print dialogue box for years. Nothing saves, custom paper size, and especially irksome is the inability to save Printer Options>Printer Settings> Media Type or Adv B/W, etc. etc.
Is reverting back to Catalina the only fix?
You probably don't need to revert all the way to Catalina. Mac OS Monterey works fine for Mac Pro printing to my HP Z9+ and Epson P600. Before that I was using Catalina on the tower computer, and Mojave on my MacBook Pro laptop for calibrating the HP printer because HP's DesignJet utility was not fully functional with Catalina for over 2 years. Finally HP released an update this year that works with newer than Mojave Mac OS, and I have found Monterey to be a nice upgrade to the original Catalina that was loaded on my Mac Pro. Unfortunately, I upgraded my personal and work laptops to Ventura, so pretty soon I will wipe the personal one and install Monterey on it too.
So I would recommend either wiping and reinstalling Catalina from an old backup or wiping and rebuilding as Monterey. I can't believe Apple screwed this up so badly.
I read about this issue a lot and I can confirm it. But when I contacted Apple support, they told me they have never hear of it. Apple just released Ventura 13.3 but they tell me nothing has been changed with the printer drivers and settings.
It's disturbing that Apple has support employees who are not trained on the very significant changes in the print dialog under MacOS Ventura. It's completely different from recent Mac OS.
I first heard about the presets not saving when I watched a tutorial by Hudson Henry on the On1 Photo Plus web site. He gave viewers a "heads up" that the print settings preset did not work in Ventura. I then verified this. Since then I'm reading about the problem in various places.
I have the secondary and really major problem that the drivers is somehow not using the correct ICC profiles for printing. My prints are lacking in contrast and deep blacks. This also seems to be an issue that others are having.
Unfortunately I never did any photo printing from Big Sur before I updated my Mac Mini M1 to Ventura, so I don't know how the Epson print driver worked with it. All my previous printing was done on my Windows 10 PC and my prints always looked like what I saw on my calibrated monitor and with soft proofing. So I did a comparison of a sample print with Windows 10 and Ventura and verified Ventura isn't printing with the correct (selected) ICC profile. And yes, it is upsetting that neither Epson or Apple acknowledge that there is a problem. Epson support wanted to see my nozzle check prints etc! :-). Of course as for the print quality problem, I can't rule out that I am doing something wrong when printing in Ventura, but I've gone over my settings multiple times and can't find any error. Not saving my presets does not help of course.
Apparently, no one prints photos in Mac Ventura OS! We must be the only ones! :-). I haven't even been able to find any in depth tutorials on using the Ventura print dialog and ICC profile settings when printing photos either from LR CC, PS, On1 PR or any other photo editor or even just printing directly from the print driver. I read something on the Adobe forums about Epson not placing the ICC profiles in the correct directory in Ventura for use with editors like Lightroom and On1 Photo Raw only in the color sync directory I have not looked into that possibility yet. But the profiles do seem to be working when soft proofing, so I'm not sure if that is correct info.
Re: Apple and Epson support employees: I had the impression those that I dealt with were just using "boilerplate" and stock answers from their computers. The apple support person said he checked with a developer and that person said their had been no reports of problems with the Ventura print driver. If professional photographers are reporting these issues, how can it be that Apple and Epson developers know nothing about it?
Everybody, please report the printing issue you have with Ventura to Apple Feedback, please. Perhaps if they get some more complaints they will investigate the print preset bugs. Go to : Bug Reporting - Apple Developer
(You might have to sign up as a Developer, which is easy to do).
I've just reported it - I didn't need to sign in as a developer. I titled it 'Printer Presets broken in Ventura - and still not working with 13.3.'
I got an acknowledgement saying 'Recent Similar Reports:None'. NOT a good sign.
Please everyone: follow Steven's advice!
