my email changed how will this effect my apple id?
I needed to change my email address and will drop the old one. My apple id is connected with this email. How can I keep my account and just change my email address?

Not a problem. See instructions in this document -> Change your Apple ID - Apple Support. You need to edit and change the primary email address assigned to your AppleID as that is the email used as the login ID for your AppleID. You can change that email address without any changes to your AppleID account or contents.
