Apple Watch Ultra Always On?

I have "Always On" enabled however after a few seconds the face goes black and only displays a small digital time eg 15:33 in the top right corner. I've tried everything and searched the web but can't find out why. Shouldn't the display be visible? I want to be able to see my fitness data at a glance while biking without having to take my hands off the bars to raise my wrist.

Hello AJBillington,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand you want to use the Always On display for your Apple Watch Ultra. Let's make sure some settings are configured that should help with this specifically. First, are the two data items you want to see included as complications on the watch face you have set? If not, make sure they are. Then, let's walk through the following:

1. Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch Ultra.
2. Tap Display & Brightness, then tap Always On.
3. Turn on Always On, then tap the following options to configure them:
- Show Complication Data: Choose the complications that show data when your wrist is down.
- Show Notifications: Choose the notifications that are visible when your wrist is down.
- Show Apps: Choose the apps that are visible when your wrist is down.
