Since abandoned email address that was used in my Apple ID, Apple asks for email password when attempting to change. Email is deceased by web site?? What now???

Since web site Excite.com abandoned and closed their email program I attempted to switch to a currently used email. Apple asks for the password for the abandoned email in the process , which of course fails, yes, I had the original password saved in 1password . I had switched over to Gmail soon after the my first iPhone and just gradually quit using Excite mail function. Once the "find my" function became available and realization it would be good to have a usable email in my Apple ID. Anyone have any ideas on accomplishing this change from dead email in Apple ID to an active email in Apple ID????

You can change your Apple ID email address on your current Apple ID so you retain access to your data and prior purchases. Note the restrictions in the article.

Apple ID Name Change.  *

Make sure you turn off Find My Phone before signing out of the old ID. Once signed out and Find My Phone is off, then sign in with the new ID, then turn Find My Phone back on.
