synch notes/files

when i take a picture with my iphone (ios 15.7.1) or ipad (ios 15.6.1) it appears in the photos app on both devices. this is what i consider synching. this doesn’t happen with my notes or files apps; i have to manually synch them by copying them to icloud and then copying to the other device. this is of course a nuisance. is it possible to synch automatically as with photos?

Hello hvdthjyfvhu,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

These steps should help:

"Set up iCloud for Notes on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or later: Tap Show All, tap Notes, then turn on Sync this [device].
    • iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or earlier: Turn on Notes.

3.To view notes stored in iCloud, open the Notes app. In the Folder list, select All iCloud or a folder in the iCloud section.

For more information on how to collaborate on notes on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, see any of the following:

More details can be found here: Set up iCloud for Notes on all your devices

Since you also need to manually sync your files, see if the steps here help to automatically sync: Set up iCloud Drive - Apple Support

If the issues persists can you provide a few more details? Are you saving your notes in the iCloud folder or on my iPhone folder?

Cheers!

thanks to everyone’s probing questions and after a lot of playing around i think i got it!

any note written in an icloud folder is synched to all other linked icloud folders. my confusion was due to my belief that the displayed icloud notes on the devices was just a listing of what was on icloud.com and that accessing them required an internet connection (similar to how chromeOS works). in fact synching copies the note to the device making it accessible without an ic.

notes written in a on-my-device folder do not go to icloud and thus are not synched to other devices.

so the solution is to write my notes in the icloud folder and then they’ll be accessible on both devices. ta-daaaaaaaaa

thanks again everyone for your help………

Thank you for the reply hvdthjyfvhu!

You mentioned that you have Notes for iCloud enabled on your device; to confirm, Notes for iCloud is enabled on your other devices? Look here: Set up iCloud for Notes on all your devices - Apple Support

Also, were you able to follow the article we provided previously to set up iCloud Drive on all of your devices? This is needed to sync files across devices: Set up iCloud Drive - Apple Support

Regarding your photos, let's also make sure that your iCloud Photos are turned on to sync photos across your devices: Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

Keep us posted.

thanks for your response.

i have notes “on” in settings>id>icloud. as i understand this, all notes, and any other “on” apps, are backed up in icloud. additionally, when notes is opened it shows “icloud” notes and “on my iphone/ipad” notes and a note can be written, or if you prefer saved, on icloud or the iphone/ipad. with notes “off” only “on my iphone/ipad is shown. when i write a note i do it in “on my iphone/ipad”.

but in the photos app a picture taken with one device is automatically copied (synched) to the other’s photo app; there are no “icloud” photos and “on my iphone/ipad” photos on the photo app. if it’s possible this is what i’d like the notes and files apps to do.

1) iphone

2) ipad

3) Set up iCloud for Notes on all your devices - Apple Support states:

“iOS 16, iPadOS 16, or later: Tap Show All, tap Notes, then turn on Sync this [device].

iOS 15, iPadOS 15, or earlier: Turn on Notes.”

this makes no reference to synching for my ios15 devices. is the answer to my inquiry that ios16 is required for synching?

4) Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support states:

”Any changes you make to your collection on one device change on your other devices too.”

the photos on icloud.com, the iphone and ipad are identical. this is what i expect with synching and it works flawlessly in the photo app.

notes on the other hand works separately. i have icloud notes, iphone notes and ipad notes. icloud notes are accessible on icloud.com and either device. device notes are only accessible on the corresponding device.

iphone

ipad

thanks for your assistance.

Hello hvdthjyfvhu,

No, iOS 16 is not needed to sync notes to iCloud. Notes syncing in iCloud has been available for years, it's not anything specific to iOS 16.

Now this statement is a bit confusing: "notes on the other hand works separately. i have icloud notes, iphone notes and ipad notes. icloud notes are accessible on icloud.com and either device. device notes are only accessible on the corresponding device."

Specifically "icloud notes are accessible on icloud.com and either device". So initially you had to copy/paste notes into the iCloud Notes folder on each device. Are you saying that the issue has now been resolved? When you create a note in the iCloud Notes folder on one of your devices it is automatically showing up on the iCloud website and on the other device now?

Cheers!
