After deleting all text messages on all my devices the storage space display still shows the storage unchanged. What else do I need to do to reclaim the space

I received a warning that I had only 0.6gb remaining in my iCloud storage space. I deleted all messages on all my devices but the storage graph did not change and still shows only 0.6 gb remaining. What else do I need to do to reclaim the fused space?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 13.0

Thank you for your help.

II have had Enable Messages in iCloud enabled since I first set up my account. Yet deleting everything (texts, photos, and attachments) still does nothing to reclaim storage. I tried to no avail applicable instructions from the list you provided.

When I go to iCloud.com I just see the line graph for storage used and the remaining space available with no apparent way to see an inventory of individual items occupying the used space with an option to delete. Is there a way to see what is actually there?

It sure would be nice if Apple had a delete button in iCloud that would restore used space.

I am now wondering whether it takes 30 days to reclaim space since it seems Apple keeps messages 30 days before removing them.

If I disable the feature it says I have 30 days to recover messages. This begs the question: If I disable the feature, can I wait 30 days and then enable it again to a full 5GB?

This is frustrating to say the least so I appreciate all the help I can get.

Thank you.

Hello Eric ~

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your help.

The only thing I have in iCloud are messages and a very small amount of data from 3 apps. As the 2 screenshots below show, I use iCloud only for synching messages on my 4 devices. Even though I deleted all messages in the app, the line graph still shows the space being occupied. I have tried everything noted in the Apple Support articles for freeing space, but to no avail. Though all messaged are gone, the space on the graph line indicated as used is unchanged.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thank you.

Hi lhtnup,

Deleting messages will free up iCloud storage space only if you have enabled Messages in iCloud as described at Keep your messages up to date with iCloud. If that feature is not enabled, removing content stored in iCloud would be necessary to regain use of that storage. The page Manage your iCloud storage includes several items and links to assist in managing iCloud:

"You can free up storage in iCloud by deleting content that you're not using:

Hello lhtnup,

Yes, you can make space in iCloud using this: Manage your iCloud storage - Apple Support

It's true, that for Messages, the folders are only accessible on an iOS or Mac device. Yes, you also need to remove them from that folder to reclaim the space.

You also need to understand, most iPhone and iPad devices are 128GB/256GB or larger, and 5GB of free iCloud storage doesn't last long. It's enough for your data, if you don't backup to iCloud.

Try this, go to Settings > [Your name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage. You can see what is taking up space, and even empty some items, like in iCloud Drive, you can delete Documents & Data and even delete Downloads in the Documents & Data in the next screen.

Or, you can purchase more iCloud storage, which is the likely step needed in order to backup everything and mot run out of storage since our devices get larger and larger every year. Upgrade to iCloud+ - Apple Support

App data alone depending on how many apps you have, and the type of data, such as game save data, or encrypted Health data, can take up the spade alone: What does iCloud back up? - Apple Support

"When you set up iCloud, you automatically get 5GB of storage. You can use that storage space for your iCloud backups, to keep your photos and videos stored in iCloud Photos, and your documents up to date in iCloud Drive. Depending on the size of your backup and amount of content you keep in iCloud, you might run out of free space. You can buy more iCloud storage or delete content."

Thanks.
