Xbox Series X app suddenly stopped outputting Atmos. All other apps fine

I hadn't logged into the Xbox app since the spring until yesterday. I put on the BBC dinosaur show and while the menu says it has Atmos, my Yamaha receiver is only displaying Dolby Digital. Same thing with For All Mankind, which I remember watching in Atmos before.


Atmos works fine in all the other apps like Netflix and Disney.


What makes it more odd is that I rented a movie via iTunes, then when I watch it on the app the Atmos works. But it still doesn't work on the TV shows.


Any ideas?

It sounds like you are not getting Dolby Atmos output from your gaming console to your receiver when watching Apple TV app content, right? Were you able to get Atmos before?


If you haven't already, try to reset the Apple TV app:


Get the Apple TV app or Apple TV+ app on your smart TV or streaming device - Apple Support


"Reset the Apple TV app or Apple TV+ app

Resetting the Apple TV app or Apple TV+ app removes your personal information and restores the app to its original settings. If you plan to sell or give away your device, or uninstall the app, you might want to reset it first.

  1. Open the Apple TV app or Apple TV+ app.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Choose the Reset option.

If you lost or can't access your device but are still signed in to the Apple TV app or Apple TV+ app, remove the device from your Apple ID device list."

Does your Xbox require any updates on their end? If so, or if you're unsure, contact Xbox support directly to help with updating the Xbox as needed.


Also, make sure that the Apple TV+ content supports Dolby Atmos. Here's more information on that process: Find movies with 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos in the Apple TV app - Apple Support. If it does show this is supported content and it is still not playing correctly you may want to reach out to Apple Support directly for further advise on how to resolve the issue. You can do so by clicking here: Apple Support, or by calling the number that is most local to your region for further support: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support.
