iPhone 4 Black Screen will not reboot

I picked up my 32gig last Friday and already the screen is going black during use and won't reboot / restore anything. After about 30 minutes the screen comes back, then goes again after about 10 minutes of use. Could this be an overheating issue? I need help on this one.

I had a very similar problem less than 24 hours after updating from 4.01 to 4.02 after not having had any issues like this at all prior to the 4.02 update.

The screen was black and none of the buttons would wake the phone up.

I plugged it into my laptop using the sync cable thinking somehow the battery went dead on me and it popped right to life with a 99% battery charge.

So far I've only seen this problem once.

I'm having a similar issue. My iPhone 4 has just randomly gone black 3 times now and the ONLY way to get it working again is to hold down the POWER button and the HOME button at the same time and do a hard reset. Not even plugging it in to the computer or charger will get it to reset. I'm curious if anyone else is having the same problem. I'm going to call AT&T/Apple support to see if I should swap my phone out (a pain).

My fresh-out-of-the-box iphone 4, has a black screen. I've gone through all the steps I could find to restore, hard reset, upgrade to 4.02, etc, etc. Screen won't turn on. If I hold it in the bright room light just right, I can faintly see the icons. The touch screen seems to work. I can only conclude that the backlight on the LCD must be defective. Don't know if this is what's happening to others or not.

Unfortunately it's activated, so my old iphone 3g is not functioning now either. Lucky me. Hopefully I can get it traded for a working one quickly.

After speaking with Apple Technical support, they thought it may have to do with fact that I restored the new iPhone 4 from my old 3GS backup - bollocks.

I did what they said regardless, restored it to the original "new" phone settings and guess what...... nothing changed.

Next day booked a Mac Genius appointment at my apple store (no iPhone appointments available for a whole week!) and got a replacement phone. Screen was stuffed and as it is manufactured seperately to the rest of the phone, "not unusual" from the Genius techy.

Problem solved - new phone - no problem.

I had the very same problem twice and the way I revived it, was by connecting the iphone to the pc. Amazingly the phone was turned on (the first time it was like it reboot the second time no). I am really puzzled about this cause I don't know the cause and I don't know if I should wait and see if it will happen again (now that i updated the software to IOS 4.1) or if I should immediately ask for a replacement. Any ideas fellas?

Yes, I got the same problem - the back light not function at all, but I can see the screen icons when I point my flash light to my iPhone 4 screen.

What I'd done to try fixing this issue is -
1) Hard-reset the phone, then
2) Restored it to factory setting, then put it aside overnight
3) Next day the phone's backlight was functioning again, therefore I restored all my data back to my phone.

This worked for around 2 days.

But today I found the same issue happened again. What I'd done today is hard-reset the phone, then turn off auto-brightness adjustment.

Seems working fine up to now.

Same thing happened to me on the 12th also. The phone was fine in the a.m, then I went to slide it on, and Poof! black screen. I could faintly make out certain icons, but by the end of the day it was completely black. I did a hard restore, the 2 soft restores through itunes and it came on for a second then out again. I contacted Rogers tech support and they couldn't help me, so they're sending me a new phone by the end of the week. I hope it was just a lemon!

Now to find a proper holster....in stock.

I've had this same problem today. Was out all day and my battery was drained completely, so when I got home I started charging it and the screen never came back, although my iPhone did turn on. I can hear stuff happening and when I slide my finger across the screen to unlock the iPhone I can hear it working, so when I angled it to a light source I can see the icons. I made an appointment with an Apple Genius for tomorrow morning at the closest Apple store, so I guess I'm gonna take it in and see what they say. So far I haven't found anyone who has found a solution other than, it just started working in the morning again all by itself. I'm kind a hoping that it doesn't start working so they can resolve the issue or replace my iPhone, I guess I'm gonna do a back up tonight and go to sleep.

I will chime in with the same problem. I will be using it (say taking pictures, looking at a map, whatever) and then the screen goes off, and NOTHING will bring it back. I can hold down any and all buttons until I am blue in the face...NOTHING! It acts as if the battery is dead.

The ONLY thing that seems to bring it back is connecting it to my Mac. After about 30 seconds to 1 minute, the screen lights up with the silver apple, and then another minute later, it returns to the standard login screen. When this happens, the battery shows 97 to 99% charged, so it is NOT a dead battery, unless the battery is totally whacked out.

I have had this happen now at least 5 times. Restoring the phone made no difference at all, regardless of what Apple says. I even tried an external battery case to give more power...same problem.

I am off to the genius bar, where I know they will tell me nothing is wrong, and I will have to come in again "when it happens again." Any suggestions on how to get around that?

Thanks...

THANK YOU!!

had my phone do the same thing today, finished a call then just went black. Put it on charge, nothing, sync it to PC nothing. When you rang it, instead of going straight to voicemail, it rang as though it was on, but didnt vibrate or anything.

I did this hard reset or whatever its called, and back on straight away - lets see if it will stay this way...

I started having the same issue with my iPhone 4 after about 4 months. The phone goes into standby and will not come out. It will not be recognized by iTunes and if it is, it says it's in a recovery mode and it has to be reformatted. I have reformatted it once but it still has the same problem. Apple says I need a service plan for support but I think it's a hardware problem from what everyone is saying. Has anyone figured out how to correct it without getting a new phone?
