How do I view the character map?

That doesn't easily show the character to press to obtain the different symbols or flourishes or allow me to change the font being used. I recall many years ago a character map as a grid that could be shown indicating the letter, symbol, web ding, etc. displayed for each key and key combination for the font selected. I am especially interested in knowing all the keys to press to get the different characters contained in the Bodoni Ornament font.
