Contacts in my iPhone went missing overnight.

I woke up this morning and my iPhone many of my iPhone contacts are missing. My Messages text threads have no name, just phone numbers. My MacBook Pro still has my contact list. It does not seem to be corrupted. So I turned off my iPhone WiFi and Cellular. I am now on the internet with my MacBook Pro only trying to figure out what to do.

Should I try to backup the entire iPhone from my iCloud? I've got that backup function turned on. Just not sure what steps to take and what sequence to take them. Feels like I've been hacked on the iPhone last night. Any thoughts?

Hey SNLSTL,

If you've recently removed an email account from your iPhone, or turned of Contacts for an account, that could cause your contacts to go missing. If that's what happened, you'll need to re-add the removed account or turn the Contacts option back on for the account to recover your contacts. You can learn more about that here: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

"Turn Contacts on or off for an account

Want to add or remove all of the contacts from an account that you already set up? Just turn Contacts on or off for that account:

  1. Go to Settings > Contacts > Accounts.
  2. Tap the account that has contacts that you want to add or remove.
  3. To add contacts, turn on Contacts. To remove contacts, turn off Contacts, then tap Delete from My iPhone."

If that is not the case, then reach out to Apple Support directly to help investigate the behavior. You can use the following link to reach out: Contact Apple Support

Kind regards.
