cataline 10.15.7 time machine, and factory reset

I know it is dated. I know, I know. I have been using Time Machine for years with an external drive, and just wanted to do one last back up on my 2012 iMac before laying the old girl to rest. As if she knows, she won't let me. Stays in "verifying backup". I partitioned the external and tried to back up to the new selection, no luck.

2 questions - I'm fairly certain there's not much that I'll be missing if I just drag and drop files to the hard drive, but

  1. will it be a real pain if I buy another desktop down the road and do not have this
  2. does a factory re-set really offer any security / privacy protection when recycling or re-selling a 2012?

Thank you

Be patient starting a new Time Machine backup on a new partition or a new drive will take a long time.

Migrating from your old iMac Time Machine backup is the fastest and easiest way to move all of your important data (user settings, photos, doc's, mail, etc..) to the new iMac.

There are some important steps to take before erasing the old iMac for reselling, giving away or recycling.
