Sandisk 1TB Extreme Requires Too Much Power even with USB 3 Camera Adapter with External Power

I constantly get the "Extreme 55AE. This Device Requires Too Much Power" pop up when I connect my Sandisk 1TB Extreme SSD to my iPhone 8. I have updated all necessary firmware and am using an official Apple USB3 Camera Adapter and an Anker 521 wall charger (rated at 20W per plug).

20W should me more than enough power to charge the phone (which it does) while simultaneously powering the SSD.

I have confirmed the SSD is formatted in exFAT format and is usable when connected to a PC. I occasionally works as expected when connected to my iPad with the same setup as above but often drops out halfway through a transfer

Any suggestions on why it won't work on my iPhone or iPad

if the ext hd rely on power from the usb connector then iphones can't provide anywhere near enough current that way, you may be able to get it to work if you connect it to an ac power usb hub and then to the iphone so the hub powers the drive
