AirPods Pro 2 start playing music at full volume!

After connecting to the AirPod Pro 2's on my iPhone and clicking play, the music will start playing at full volume. I'd assume this is a bug because even if I connect and turn the volume down first (~20%) before clicking play it will still start playing at 100% (and to clarify, the slider will still show 20%).

It is intermittent, but it is really painful when it does happens, and I don't really know there's a way around it. I've also tried setting up an automation to lower the volume when my AirPods are connected, but sadly this doesn't appear to solve the issue either. Thus I'm left guessing whether or not I'll get a full volume blast when I click the play button after connecting or not, and that's a little disappointing considering how well these work in every other regard.

I really love these earphones, but sadly this is something that's heavily making me reconsider the choice. I'm quite sure this could be damaging to one's hearing?

I don't know if others are experiencing this or perhaps have solved it? I've seen some people mention this problem on Reddit and on a previously closed thread too.

If it is bug related, I really hope there's a fix for this soon!

Hey Gena_D,

Thanks for the feedback, it's really appreciated.

I think I'd found what might be happening, and it may not necessarily be a bug. I'd detailed this to the support team over at Twitter who've been quite proactive about it!

It appears that when the AirPods automatically switch from my MacBook Pro to my iPhone (can verify this by the connected notification and by seeing the earphones at the top portion of my screen) that the volume control doesn't switch over immediately. The volume only appears to switch over when I click play on any media, and hence the issue I'd been experiencing where it would start playing at a high volume (it's actually just playing on the previously connected volume). I'll attach a screenshot to show the AirPods being connected, but the volume control not having updated! This may be done for a variety of reasons I may not be privy too, and so hence me saying it may not be a bug.

I'd found a work around for the time being though, after the AirPods have shown to be connected to the phone (after switching from the laptop), you can navigate to the media and change the source to AirPods, then navigate back to the home screen and attempt to change volume there. When doing this it appears to be possible to lower the volume without having to click play first :)

Thanks again!

Hello dav50,

We can definitely understand wanting that issue resolved and would love to help.

To start off, do you have any Accessibility features or settings enable for your AirPods? This article explains a bit about how that can make some tones louder or quieter: Adjust the volume of sound effects for AirPods.

A reset of your AirPods (How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro) and a restart of the companion iPhone (Restart your iPhone) might also help.

Let us know if we can help with anything else at all or if this doesn't settle your issue so we can look into this further with you. Thanks and have a fabulous day!
