A notification pops up on my computer every now and then "The Vulnerability Protection Engine has been corrupted and could not be used..." however I do not know what this means.

It looks like you may have a Norton antivirus app installed. You should uninstall it. Macs do not need antivirus apps and can cause various issues.

The The Built in Security is all that is required to protect the computer.
