Read email marks not syncing

Since upgrading to iOS 16, my (gmail) read marks are not syncing. Any idea how to correct this?

This could mean a gmail account within the Mail app, or the Gmail app. If the issue happens specifically with the Gmail app, let's follow these steps to troubleshoot the behavior with the app: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open


  1. Close the app and open it again. Test to see if the read marks or read receipts are correct.
  2. Restart your iPhone.
  3. Make sure iOS and apps are fully updated. There may have been additional updates that resolved issues that were causing the behavior you've described.
  4. If the issue continues, delete and add the app again.


If this issue happens in the Mail app, let us know more details about exactly what is not syncing, which devices you're syncing between, and if other email accounts are affected. Those details will help guide our next steps.
