Brio 500 webcam shows only a black screen in Ventura

The brio webcam is advertised as MacOS compatible, so I got one, but it doesn't seem to work in Ventura? It is detected correctly, but will show a black screen in any apps trying to use it. Logitech support is no help and is saying to contact Apple support... I have seen other posts describing the problem, and all seems to point that the problem happens only after upgrading to Ventura.

Anyone was able to make this webcam work?

I was having the same issue but resolved it by updating the Brio 500 firmware through LogiTune.

On 1 Mac I was able to download the firmware but on 4 others it would not update the firmware, only the LogiTune software. I got around this by downloading LogiTune software onto a PC, then connecting the Brio 500 to the PC and updating the firmware. (purple light glowing on Brio 500) When it finished I was able to connect it to my MacBookPro and it is now working fine.

Youneed to update the webcam firmware through LogiTune. But on Mac, the firmware update often fails(don't bother contactinfg logitech non-support if you want to keep your sanity), so you'll probably need to have a windows machine, install logitune, and update the firmware from there.

But, the ultimate solution is to return your webcam and get a refund(if you still can) and use another brand. Logitech support is non-existent.

I bought this camera after my MacBook Pro's integrated camera stopped working, only to have the same black screen as the internal camera. Both the internal and Brio 500 cameras show a dark screen in every single app (Apple support said to wait for the next update to see if it's fixed because all checkups turned out fine). This happened after the Ventura update. So frustrating.

Hello kinwolf,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If you're not able to use a peripheral after updating, it may mean the manufacturer might need to release an updated driver that supports the OS. With hat being said, this guide may be of some use in resolving things.

Use an external camera with Mac - Apple Support

"Use an external camera with Mac

Many Mac computers have a built-in camera located near the top edge of the screen, but you can also use an external camera with your Mac.

Connect an external camera

  1. Connect the camera’s cable to a port on your Mac. See About the video ports on Mac.
  2. If the camera has a connector that doesn’t match the port you want to connect it to, you may be able to use it with an adapter. See the Apple Support article Adapters for the Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, or USB-C port on your Mac.
  3. Wait 10 to 15 seconds for your Mac to recognize the camera.

For more information about connecting your external camera, see the manufacturer’s instructions.

Use an external camera with apps and features

  • Photo Booth: Click Camera in the menu bar, then choose your external camera.
  • FaceTime: Click Video in the menu bar, then choose your external camera.
  • QuickTime Player: Choose File > New Movie Recording, click the Options pop-up menu, then choose your external camera.
  • Head pointer: Choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click Accessibility , click Pointer Control, then click Alternate Control Methods. Click Options next to “Enable head pointer,” click Camera Options, then choose your external camera.
  • Third-party apps: You may be able to use your external camera with third-party apps you downloaded from the App Store. To find out how, read the developer’s instructions or explore the app’s menus and preferences."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Thanks for that. I initially bought a BRIO 505 direct from Logitech which did not work (now I know why) and sent it back. I then bought a BRIO 500 from Amazon, which also does not work.... so that will go back also. I don't have a Windows machine unfortuantely. I do however have a Logi Stream webcam which works perfectly so I'll stick with that.
