How can I delete large files with many items?

There is a folder. It has a subfolder with 1000 files in it. I move it to the trash. I click empty bin, but I can't delete it because the Mac says one or more files are in use.

I select 25 files in the subfolder (in the bin), right click, delete inmetiately, and voila! it deletes.

But if I select 30 or more files - Mac prints a message with code 8072 (unexpected error), and doesn't delete them.

Because with 25 items it is too slow.

Mac mini, macOS 13.0

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and try to delete from there. Then reboot normally.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Is the app that controls/creates these cache files running when you try to empty the trash? If so, it would make sense that at least some would be locked as "in use". It's also not unusual for an app to hold files open even if you have no projects open at the time.

Does the app have an option within itself to clear the cache? If yes, use that instead of trying to delete things from the Finder.

Yes, I thought about that. The video I showed the DaVinci Resolve cash files.

The same is true for all other folders, subfolders and the large number of files in them (png, ai, caf, svg, aif, mp4, etc... all of them.)

The terminal Sudo rm... does not work. It does nothing.

I tried deleting from external SSD, external HD and the built-in SSD.

Same thing.

I emphasize, the problem only occurs with a large number of files. If there are less than 20 or so the problem does not occur.
